Sam Haynes had 35 saves, and Robby Sours, Alex James, and Jordan Gachman combined for 7 goals and 10 points in a 7-2 season-opening Scots victory over the Allen Eagles on Sept. 19.
The visitors came down Central Expressway with a purpose, peppering the net with 20 shots on goal in the 1st period. Sam Haynes turned aside 19 of those with a confident calmness. Penalties were much the story in the 1st period, and the Scots quickly scored a power play goal, shorthanded goal, and then added an even strength goal to take a 3-0 lead within the first six minutes of play.
The teams switched ends for the 2nd period, but again HP struck early for 2 goals within 3 ½ minutes, including another PP goal, to take a commanding 5-1 lead. The invaders from Collin County were not sure whether to cry or wind their watches.
Sours sniped his second of the game to open a “spirited” final frame: 7 penalties, and a few post-whistle pleasantries. Midway through the period, James tallied his 3rd on a nifty power play setup to conclude the scoring, and needless to say, the hats rained down on the ice.
Overall, the team nicely limited Allen’s breakaway chances, and will look to reduce the amount of time in the defensive zone in coming weeks.
Players and coaches were not made immediately available to the media for post-game interviews.
